Progression through the M.S. in Nursing
Requirements for progression through the Master of Science Program in Nursing
- Undergraduate research as a prerequisite or co-requisite to Master's core.
- Evidence of a basic physical assessment course or its equivalent (C.E.) as a prerequisite to Advanced Physical Assessment.
- Undergraduate Statistics course.
- Health and professional requirements as determined by the nursing program. (See Castle Branch in the Graduate Nursing Handbook.)
Maintenance of Academic Standards for the M.S. in Nursing
The quality point index requirement is 3.0.
Repeating Courses in the M.S. in Nursing
A course in which the student receives a grade below “B’’ must be repeated. The option to repeat a course may be repeated one time only. The student may use this option on two different courses.
Withdrawing from a Course in the M.S. in Nursing
Students may withdraw from the same nursing course no more than one time. The student must then complete the course and earn a grade when retaking.
Pass/Fail Courses in the M.S. in Nursing
In Pass/Fail Graduate courses a "P" is equivalent to a "B" grade or higher.
Procedures for Admission into the M.S. Program in Nursing
All students seeking admission to the Master’s Program in Nursing must complete a graduate program application form with the non-refundable application fee. Checks should be made payable to Molloy University. Prospective students must submit official transcripts from the institution that conferred their Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing. After all information has been received and reviewed, an interview with the Graduate Program Director will be arranged for qualifying applicants.
Application for the Fall semester must be submitted by February 1st. Spring semester applications must be submitted by October 1st. Prospective students who miss the application deadline dates may be considered on an individual basis.
Matriculated Status for the M.S. in Nursing
Students are matriculated if they have met the requirements of admission, have been accepted into the Graduate Nursing Program and are seeking to fulfill all the requirements of the Master’s degree.
Non-matriculated Status for the M.S. in Nursing
Students whose admission process is incomplete but are earning credits for the specific prerequisite or required graduate courses for the degree; or students who wish to take graduate courses without pursuing a degree. Such students must have the permission of the Graduate Program Director. Should a non-matriculated student decide to work toward a degree, he or she must follow the regular admissions process. Non-matriculated students should be aware that no more than six (6) credits completed as a non-matriculated student may be used to fulfill requirements for a degree, and that non-matriculated status can be maintained for a maximum period of two years.
Provisional Academic Status for the M.S. in Nursing
Students who have been accepted into the M.S. program, but have not fully met the Graduate Admissions criteria may register for courses and must receive a grade of “B” in the first six (6) credits taken. Re-evaluation for continued matriculated status will follow completion of these courses. Failure to achieve a grade of “B” or better in the first six (6) credits taken will result in dismissal from the program.
Nursing Master's Pre-Clinical/Practicum Requirements
Prior to entry into a clinical or practicum course, students are required to have the following on file with Castle Branch (outside organization that will collect all clinical documents for your clinical placement):
• Current New York State license registration certificate
• Malpractice insurance appropriate to your program (Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner Student) with coverage of $1,000,000 per claim/ $3,000,000 aggregate
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Evidence of Infection Control Training
• All specific Castle Branch requirements (Please review Graduate Nursing Handbook for most up-to-date requirements.)
Background Checks and Drug Testing
Clinical agencies require yearly physicals, immunizations, PPD, malpractice insurance, CLS and a variety of other documents. They also require drug screening and background checks. Molloy utilizes Castle Branch, a student immunization tracker with a secure web-based management system that manages required student records. Students conveniently upload their documents, which are then securely stored online where both the college and the student can view them.
A student will not be allowed to attend clinical without uploading appropriate documents and completing the required drug screening and background checks. Background checks will be stored in the Castle Branch system and may be shared with the clinical agencies at their request.
The Castle Branch Student Immunization Tracker was designed to be fully compliant with all federal laws, including HIPAA and FERPA. Procedures for gathering maintaining and storing student records follow strict guidelines that protect the rights, security and confidentiality of students.
