SPA 3520 Latin American Literature Survey

(formerly SPA 352; Latin American Literature From the Pre-Columbian Era to the Twenty-First Century; Hispanic Literature From the Nineteenth Century to the Twenty-First Century)

This course is a multi-genre introduction to literary analysis with readings, discussions, and writing assignments related to the Hispanic literatures.  This course will provide students with the necessary tools for literary appreciation and interpretation in the field of Hispanic literary studies. Students will become familiar with the technical vocabulary of literary criticism and will gain understanding of the artistic, cultural, and political implications of literature in the Spanish-speaking countries of Latin America. Discussions on the different periods, movements and literary currents will complement the understanding of reading and interpreting the texts from the pre-Columbian era to contemporary literature.
