Graduation and Degree Requirements

The graduation review process is triggered by submitting an online Application for Graduation by the deadlines below:

• Fall (December) Graduation – Apply by October 1st

• Intersession (January) Graduation – Apply by October 1st

• Spring (May) Graduation – Apply by February 1st

• Summer (August) Graduation – Apply by March 1st

Students missing the above deadlines should contact the Office of the Registrar (registrar@molloy.edu) to request a late application.

There is no fee for applying for graduation; however, if a student is applying to graduate in a term during which they are not registered for any coursework, they will be charged the standard enrollment fee.

After a graduation application is submitted, a final review of the student’s records will be performed to verify that all degree requirements will be met at the end of the student's last term. Reviews must be approved by the Graduate or Doctoral Program Director for the student’s program. Students who apply for graduation but do not fulfill all degree requirements by the conferral date will be removed from the graduation list and will need to reapply for graduation for the term in which the requirements will be met.

Student Affairs hosts the annual Commencement Ceremony in May for all graduating students. Other celebratory events are held throughout the year, such as pinning and hooding ceremonies and class nights. Information on participation costs may involve purchasing the cap and gown, photos, etc. will be distributed by Student Affairs. Attendance at Commencement is optional. Students and their families are not charged an attendance fee.

Below are the minimum degree requirements, maximum time for completion, and academic standards by subject and degree type:

Business

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Business Administration, Post-Bachelor’s Certificate, Post-Master’s Certificate
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework and prerequisite knowledge
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Five (5) years. An extension may be granted with permission of the Graduate Business Program Director, Associate Dean or Dean.
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B -’’ are not applicable to this degree.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework, prerequisites, clinical practicum and internship, e-portfolio, and passing the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Five (5) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B -’’ are not applicable to this degree.•

Criminal Justice

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework and prerequisites
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Five (5) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B-” are not applicable to this degree.

Education (Graduate)

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science, Post-Bachelor’s Certificate, Post-Master’s Certificate
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework and prerequisites; Initial Certification Programs require field placement hours and student teaching.
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Five (5) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B" are not applicable to this degree.
  • Additional Requirements: Compilation of a Professional Portfolio in all Graduate Education Programs. Evidence of successful completion of all benchmark performances must be included in this portfolio.

Education (Doctoral)

  • Degrees Awarded: Doctor of Education
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework and dissertation defense
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Nine (9) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.2 cumulative average. Grades below "B" are not applicable to the degree.
  • Additional Requirements: Requirement information is covered in the Education Doctoral Program section of the catalog and the Education Doctoral Handbook.

Music Therapy

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework, prerequisites, and clinical hours
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Seven (7) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B-” are not applicable to this degree.

Nursing (Graduate)

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science, Post-Bachelor’s Certificate, Post-Master’s Certificate
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework and clinical hours
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Seven (7) years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B” are not applicable to this degree.

Nursing (Doctoral)

  • Degrees Awarded: Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Degree Requirements:

  • DNP: All required coursework clinical hours and DNP project defense
  • PhD: All required coursework, dissertation defense, and upload to Proquest
    Maximum Time for Completion:
  • DNP: Five (5) Years
  • PhD: Nine (9) Years

Academic Standards:

  • DNP: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B” are not applicable to this degree.
  • PhD: Maintenance of 3.2 cumulative average. Grades below “B-”are not applicable to this degree.
  • Additional Requirements: Requirement information is covered in the Nursing Doctoral Program section of the catalog and the Nursing Ph.D. Program Handbook, the Nursing Doctoral Dissertation Guideline Booklet, and the DNP Handbook.

Speech-Language Pathology

  • Degrees Awarded: Master of Science
  • Degree Requirements: All required coursework, perquisites, and clinical hours
  • Maximum Time for Completion: Two (2) Years
  • Academic Standards: Maintenance of 3.0 cumulative average. Grades below “B-” are not applicable to this degree.
  • Additional Requirements: Successful completion of a research proposal suitable for the conducting of research, a completed thesis, or a comprehensive exam.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) : All required coursework and requirements, predissertation research, qualifying exam, proposal defense, dissertation defense.

In addition to the requirements listed above, all students must submit an online application for graduation to have their record considered for graduation.
