Program Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing, and realizing musical notation. Students recognize and apply notational, analytical and performance practices from a wide range of eras, styles and cultures to performance and educational settings.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in performing on their primary instrument or voice and in ensemble settings.
  • Apply an extensive, functional musical skillset toward educational settings. (This skill set includes proficiency in voice, keyboard, wind, brass, string, percussion, ensembles, conducting, arranging, solo performance and ensemble performance.)
  • Be well acquainted with musical literature and conventions from diverse cultures and periods, along with their respective sociocultural and historical contexts.
  • Be aware of current issues, philosophies, scholarship, methods, materials and practices in music education. Students evaluate, select, reject, adapt and apply these to specific teaching situations as appropriate.
  • Apply evaluative techniques to assess students' educational needs. Students design developmentally and culturally appropriate lessons and programming to address these needs.

Students with more advanced knowledge may register for MUS 1540 Applied Guitar in place of MUS 1060/2070 in consultation with their advisor. Students whose primary instrument is guitar must enroll in MUS 1540 Applied Guitar each semester for 7 consecutive semesters of their academic degree. (Students whose primary instrument is guitar take MUS 1540 Applied Guitar in place of MUS 1060 and MUS 2070. Elective applied instruction may be pursued in consultation with the advisor to ensure all credit requirements are met in this category.

Students whose primary instrument is piano take MUS 1260 Applied Piano in place of MUS 1100 and MUS 1110, and/or MUS 2220 Piano Accompaniment in consultation with their advisor. All students (including pianists as primary) are required to take MUS 2230 and MUS 3150. (Students declaring piano as their primary instrument must enroll in MUS 1260 Applied Piano each semester for 7 consecutive semesters of their academic degree. Elective applied instruction may be pursued in consultation with the advisor to ensure all credit requirements are met in this category.)
