MHC 5430 Spirituality & Contemplative Practices in Counseling

This elective course explores the integration of spirituality, mindfulness, and contemplative practices into the counseling process. Students will examine the theories and techniques that support counselors in effectively engaging clients in the exploration of their spiritual and religious lives, particularly as these relate to broader mental health concerns. The course places a strong emphasis on the relevance of mindfulness in the counseling profession, especially in enhancing multicultural awareness. Students will also explore evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies aimed at improving the well-being of their future clients. Additionally, the course fosters the development of professional identity through critical self-examination, self-awareness, and self-efficacy. Ethical standards related to spiritual and religious issues in counseling will be thoroughly reviewed.
