Academic Requirements for Progression

All students in the Ph.D. program need to maintain the following academic standards to ensure continuance and successful completion.

  • A GPA of 3.0 or above or “Pass” in all past coursework
  • A course is required to be repeated if a student earns a “Fail” grade in a course that have only Pass/ Fail grading option or less than a “B-” in courses with a letter grade. A Ph.D. student can only repeat a course twice before their academic progress is stalled. A student can repeat a maximum of two courses before being put on Academic probation. Failure in a third course will lead to dismissal.
  • Successful completion of all Program-related examinations as stated in the section on successful progression in the program
  • No more than one year of continuous “leave of absence” unless there is sufficient reason deemed by the Program Director and the mentoring faculty advisor
  • Continuing participation in department or independent research
  • Teach at least one and no more than three semesters of undergraduate coursework in the CSD program
