This course consists of an examination of the mathematical skills and concepts that form the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics for Seventh Grade, Eighth Grade and Integrated Algebra 1. The teacher candidate will learn how to create lessons to teach the standards in developmentally appropriate ways. Lessons will be planned to promote problem solving strategies through real-world applications. The use of instructional technology such as the graphing calculator, iPad and computer will be incorporated in the activities that the teacher candidate will learn how to design. Attention will be given to helping the teacher candidate develop strategies to teach to a diverse and multicultural population. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ (NCTM) eight mathematical practices will be investigated and applied in all activities. Guided by the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics, a content item analysis of the mathematics and question formats of the Grade 7, Grade 8 NYS assessments and the Algebra 1 Common Core Regents will be reviewed.
