NUR 5831 Role of Nurse Practitioner
This course provides students with the opportunity to explore and analyze the role of the Nurse Practitioner across practice settings. The evolution of the role will be described, as well as educational preparation, scope of practice, regulation, and certification. Professional organizations that support advanced practice roles will be introduced. Evidenced based practice, quality improvement, and research will be presented through the lens of a Nurse Practitioner, as well as strategies for incorporating these principals into practice. Ethical and legal issues, as well as legislative issues and health care policies that influence advanced nursing practice will be analyzed. Healthcare systems, healthcare finance, documentation, billing, and coding will be explored. Health care inequities and disparities will be uncovered, and social determinants of health will be emphasized. Students will also reflect upon possible employment settings, starting a business, and preparing for interviews. 45 lecture hours per semester.
