CRJ 5340 Race, Diversity and Crime

This course will examine the relationship between race, diversity, crime and the criminal justice system with particular attention given to theoretical issues in the literature involving race, disabilities and social issues in the literature involving race, disabilities and social class: crime statistics and bias in the criminal justice system related to arrests, prosecutions, sentencing and incarceration. Public policy questions involving issues such as racial profiling capital punishment and the "War on Drugs" will also be discussed. Critical criminology, consensus/functionalist theory and other explanations will be issues covered in this class.
