EDU 5353 Brain, Cognition and Learning
This course is centered around understanding concepts in cognitive psychology and neuroscience to better understand the complexities of the science of learning. Students will engage in designing learning experience that facilitate their pedagogy beyond teaching basic content knowledge by fostering a deeper understanding of the mind, the brain and complexities of learning. Concepts in educational neuroscience research, such as self-regulation, engagement, motivation, mindset, cognitive load theory, constructivism and goal orientation will be reviewed to address both the theoretical principles and the practical applications of each concept. Special attention will be given to exploring applications, examples and strategies for all subject areas; and new ways of thinking about intelligence, academic ability and assessment. Students will also investigate and conceptualize alternate models of pedagogy such as games-based learning, virtual labs and flipped classrooms.
