Life Experience Credit and Portfolio Evaluation

Life experience credit will be granted by Molloy University provided that a matriculated student can demonstrate university-level competency through the development of a life experience portfolio. A portfolio is a collection of materials documenting and verifying prior learning for a Molloy course or courses applicable to the student’s degree program. The student must obtain and provide evidence of university-level learning. Admitted students are encouraged to seek approval from the Office of the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods to enroll in the life experience portfolio course. An initial meeting with the Assistant Director of Outreach and Partnerships will be necessary before meeting with the Office of the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods. The Assistant Director of Outreach and Partnerships will facilitate the portfolio process between the student and the Office of the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods.

The completed portfolio must be submitted to the Office of the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods prior to a student earning their final 30 credits.

If approved, a student will register for a three-credit portfolio course and pay Molloy’s current undergraduate tuition rate. Students may attain a maximum of 12 credits via the portfolio prepared in this course. The three credits earned by successfully completing the portfolio course may count toward a student’s degree (as an elective). Students will earn a letter grade after completing the portfolio course. As with any elective course, students may choose to take the portfolio course as a pass/fail option. Students may submit subsequent portfolios for a maximum of 30 credits and students can refer to the Special Fees section of the undergraduate catalog.

The following highlights the steps to enroll in a Molloy Life Experience Portfolio Course:

  1. The student contacts the Office of Outreach and Partnerships to schedule an appointment to discuss prior learning, life experience policy, and Molloy course options.
  2. The student identifies courses that meet prior university-level learning.
  3. The student meets with the Office of the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods to review prior learning and appropriate Molloy courses. The Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods initiates discussion with academic discipline.
  4. Once approved by the Dean of Innovative Delivery Methods, the student enrolls in a three-credit portfolio course.
