EDU 5060 Integrated Language Arts and Reading for the Inclusive Classroom of Diverse Learners in Early Childhood and Childhood Settings

This course is designed to prepare teacher candidates to employ an array of pedagogical approaches necessary for literacy development and instruction in English language arts and the content areas for the early childhood, primary and intermediate elementary grades. Teacher candidates will be presented with practical and theoretical frameworks on which integrated language arts and reading instruction can be built. They will explore research-based best practices in language arts, including structured reading and content-area reading and writing. Developmentally appropriate instruction related to areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, writing instruction, and language is examined. Teacher candidates will practice using a variety of assessments as diagnostic and prescriptive tools to inform remedial and enrichment techniques. The New York State Standards will provide the impetus upon which teacher candidates will design, perform, analyze, and evaluate lessons with interdisciplinary connections demonstrating their understanding of research-based best practices. The focus includes learning how to differentiate strategies to meet the needs of culturally diverse students and those with varied academic abilities.
