Dissertation for PhD Nursing

Each student is required to conduct original, independent research which contributes to knowledge development in nursing. The doctoral dissertation process begins with admission to the doctoral program which includes close attention to the research interests of the student. Early in the program, the student’s Academic Advisor and the student should discuss the student’s potential research interest. The Academic Advisor may recommend faculty who have expertise in the subject matter and are qualified to direct the student in dissertation research. Within the first year, the student should meet such faculty and discuss the relevance and research potential of the student’s particular interest. Students are also expected to explore the University faculty profile pages and actively seek out faculty with a shared research interest.

Faculty Members in each course also assist in guiding the student in the investigation and selection of a topic for research that conforms to the quality of research by the University and The Barbara H. Hagan School of Nursing and Health Sciences. They do this in a manner that is consistent with the development of independence, initiative, and excellence on the part of the student. The goal of the Hallmarks Seminars, NUR 6000 Hallmarks of Scholarly Inquiry and NUR 6100 Hallmarks of Scholarly Design, is to have students develop and refine a researchable question that will become the focus of their dissertation. Dissertation Committee selection is expected by the end of N 6100, prior to enrolling in N 7000.

The candidate will select a Dissertation Chair and members of the Dissertation Committee with approval of the Director of the PhD in Nursing Program. The Dissertation Committee Membership form must be submitted for signature to the Director of the PhD in Nursing Program.
