NUR 5381 Clinical Nurse Specialist Role

This course provides students with foundational knowledge to engage in all dimensions of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role. The historical development of the advanced practice Clinical Nurse Specialist role will be discussed in terms of three Spheres of Impact as defined by the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. Role expectations, standards, competencies, and desired outcomes of CNS practice will be highlighted. Students will learn about CNS duties to gather and analyze relevant data, anticipate problems, and effectively negotiate an interdisciplinary work environment for the benefit of patients, nurses, and organization. Regulatory and legal aspects related to CNS certification, advanced practice licensing, and CNS billing will be presented. 45 lecture hours per semester. Synchronous Hybrid format. [NOTE: Co-requisite/pre-requisite for NUR-5382, NUR-5383, NUR-5384.]
