EDU 5220 Current Issues in Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2: Assessment of Progress, Relationships, Families, Legal and Community Issues

This course focuses on current issues affecting policy and practice in the field of early childhood education. Course content covers current issues, culturally responsive teaching methodology, strategies, and curriculum adaptations. It covers developmentally appropriate practices reflective of research-based pedagogy and integration of technology in the classroom. The course includes procedures for designing, implementing, and managing curriculum and assessments to meet diverse needs of young children in inclusive settings. The importance of family and community relationships as well as ethical guidelines for early childhood practices are discussed. Specific environmental issues are addressed to provide a rich learning experience. In addition to exploring NYS Standards, this course addresses standards from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the Association of Childhood Education International, Head Start Program Performance Standards and other related agencies. Students will explore facets of play-based instruction via an exciting culminating group project. The journey equips students to emerge energized, enlightened and equipped to make a meaningful impact as early childhood advocates and educators.

Note: Groups will meet virtually, and may elect to do so in person, with the agreement of all group mates.
