EDU 5930 Oh Look! Critical Vision: Art, Art Museums, and Social Justice Education
This course focuses on critical and social justice approaches to understanding and using visual art and art museums in education, exploring connections between looking, seeing and being with others. In this course students will begin with a basic overview of social justice in education to then learn about visual knowledge, in particular the knowledge contained in art museums. They will engage in an analysis of key questions about visual art and power through reading academic texts and visiting museums and community art spaces. They will demonstrate understanding by producing both formal academic writing and their own social justice art. Note: no artistic skill is needed to participate in this course. The aim of this course is to give educators the tools to improve their practice by developing a better understanding of the relationship between social justice and visual art.
