EDU 5922 Explorations in Higher Education Curriculum

This course will focus on curriculum in the context of higher education institutions. The course will focus on higher education institutions as co-curricular spaces that afford experiences of

inclusion and exclusion in the discourse and practice of higher learning. Students will explore what curriculum is in theory, including features of hidden curriculum, and how curriculum can be identified in multiple and overlapping spaces of student and faculty experience in higher education. Students will explore the curriculum of departments and classrooms, clubs, extra- and co-curricular activities; online and technological spaces; residency halls and campus life; and student support services. Specific attention will be paid to how curriculum can facilitate or prevent student engagement and belonging and university-wide efforts to diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. The course will culminate in a mini-ethnographic research project in which students conduct fieldwork about curriculum in a higher education institution.
