EDU 5062 Language and Literacy: Principles and Practices for Childhood Classrooms (Grades 1 - 6)

This course is designed to prepare course participants with the necessary skills to teach Reading, Writing and Language Arts to culturally diverse students as well as to those with varied academic abilities in the elementary grades. Participants will be presented with practical and theoretical frameworks on which integrated language arts and reading instruction can be built, with special emphasis on the components of literacy through the examination of various models and processes of reading instruction. Through teacher and student-generated topics, participants will explore research into differentiation and child development as they relate to reading and writing processes. New York State Standards provide the impetus upon which teacher candidates design methods for fostering students’ understanding that reading, writing, listening and speaking are important and valuable tools for communication.
