EDU 5272 Psychological, Social and Special Needs of Early Adolescents

This course focuses on the special cognitive, psychological, social and developmental needs of early adolescents in order to prepare teachers to teach this population more effectively. Emphasis is given to all maturational factors, psychosocial components and cultural aspects, which affect learning. Special consideration is given to classroom adaptations necessary to the unique developmental patterns of adolescent students including those with special needs and with limited English proficiency. Attention will be focused on the components necessary to the formation of classroom communities, which are inclusive, value fostering and emotionally supportive for early adolescents of all ability levels within a multicultural and diverse social environment.
